Well this has been a great journey so far, and I am completely smitten with this craft! Here's some pics of my first attempt - A flamed maple DREAD. The maple back and sides are from eBay as is the sitka top. (Hey I didn't know about our fine sponsors when I bought them!) The fretboard and bridge are Bois D' Rose. Still needs final set up and some hand polishing, but I am pretty pleased. It actually sounds good! Warts? Oh yeah baby, it's got its share of 'em. But with every one a valuable lesson learned and applied to the next one! My thanks go out to all of you in this great community of the OLF!

The next one is about three weeks out, and it will be better!

Thanks to everyone here, and particularly Brock and Lance for all the hard work they do providing this great resource!

Regards,

-Mark

Thanks guys!

Hesh:
Thanks for the kind comments. Coming from someone building the quality of the guitars you build that means a lot. Yes - #2 is an EIR and Carpathian Herringbone DREAD. #3 has the back on, and I just finished carving the braces for the top - My first "Zoot" guitar - flamed hondo mahogany and Carpathian DREAD. #4 has the sides bent, and is for a friend - another Zoot guitar, it is an EIR and Carpathian Herringbone DREAD. Hmmm... I'm detecting a trend here. Well I play bluegrass and hang out with bluegrass guitar players, so....

Paul:
Thanks man! The neck is hondo mahogany I had my local hardwood guy order for me. I bought a $350 plank from him and got enough material for around 35 necks - a good deal, although I had to create my own blanks of course. It is a straight bolt-on butt joint, stained with some walnut gel stain and finished with true oil. The next neck gets a mortise and tenon...

Thanks Serge!

The bindings are tortoise - Nitro celluloid.

Don't worry, this is not a race! But you'd better hurry up 'cause my #2 is gonna be together soon!

I thought you were going to say you bought the neck pre-made, but you've scratch built that too! Good job!

Oh! BTW, the finish is Rockhard varnish, with an FP top coat.

Mark that is a fantastic looking instrument! I love the maple and your headstock inlay is very cool as well...

Keep it up, and from what I see, you intend to surpass Hesh's and Andy's prodigious output!

Wow! Extreme for a first go! Congrats! I'll bet you're proud and wait'll you show it to your family and friends. They'll likely be dumbfounded.

Makes me want to burn the photos of my first one. It's hanging in the shop as a reminder to me of what not to do!

Todd:

Thanks! It was pretty "seat of the pants", as were many of the steps on this first one!

I'm going to do the neck on the second one this weekend, with volute - I'll take pics of the process.

Thanks Arnt! If the F5 I'm working on turns out a 1/10th as good as the one you recently posted, I'll be a truly happy boy!
